Barthalmus Grant 2022

Congratulations to Nick for being awarded the 2022 George Barthalmus Undergraduate Research Award from the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium Organization! The award is meant to give sophomores a kick-start in their research endeavors. We’re excited to use the funds in support of our research on thiamine-catalyzed radical chemistry!

SERMACS 2022

Ryan traveled to Puerto Rico this week to present on his work with Dr. Goforth as part of Furman’s REU program, as well as our work with thiamine-dependent enzymes. A little jealous that I didn’t get to travel with them this time, especially since they were at the beach while it was 35 degrees Fahrenheit here!

NCICU STEM Mentoring Grant

Congratulations to our interdisciplinary team from Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Engineering, Math and the Office of Student Success for being awarded a STEM Mentoring Grant from the NC Independent Colleges and Universities. This is a 3 year grant program that provides financial support for mentoring programs for underrepresented students in STEM. We are excited to start our program this fall!

Edna Queener Proffit Symposium

We had a great time at our department’s annual Edna Queener Proffit Symposium. Ryan and other department research students shared their research for the year, and Ryan was presented with his Derieux award from the NCAS meeting (Kendall, Dr. Goforth’s student, won one as well!). Campbell Alumna Alisha gave a keynote on her graduate school work at NCSU as well. It was a great way to end the year!

Wiggins Symposium Presentations and Keynote

Stephanie presented her work on thiamine-dependent enzyme biocatalysis at Campbell’s annual Wiggins Symposium today. Great job Stephanie!

Also, I had the great honor of being invited to give the keynote address for the symposium. I had a lot of fun talking about the value of undergraduate research with two of our amazing student research fellows, Callen and Skylar. If you want to watch the symposium keynote address and awards ceremony, you can access it at the link below.

Keynote and Awards Ceremony

I’m excited for this year’s edition of the research fellows program, coming summer 2022!
